I'm the one the public ADOOOOOORRRRE...!!!
~ The Phantom, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope.

The Phantom of the Bwahpera (also known as Phantom or Tom Phan) is a boss from Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. He is created when the Rabbid with the Supa-Merge headset merges an ordinary Rabbid with a Boo toy and a Phonegraph. He is very large, having a transparent dome instead of legs which contains the Phonograph. He is one of the only Rabbids to speak using a traditional lexicon, or a French accent.

Biography[]

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[]

After Mario, Beep-O, and co. unlock the Moon Gate in order to awaken warrior Tom Phan to help them, they realize the person was actually Bowser Jr., who had hacked F.B's email account. Bowser Jr. then tells the group that Tom Phan is, or at least will be real, pulling out the "Relics of Goodness"; a Rabbid, a Boo Balloon, and a Gramophone and scaring Spawny into fusing them. As Relics combine to create Tom Phan, Bowser Jr. reveals that he send them the letters about collecting the Relics of Goodness, and uses Spawny to create the Phantom. Afterwards, the Phantom then begins to sing a ballad about his hatred of Mario and desire to kill him and his friends before starting the battle. As the battle starts, Beep-0 tells the group that his sensors indicate that Phantom is immune to all attacks while in the spotlight and that they will need to take out the lights before trying to attack him. After taking out the lights and bringing down Phantom's health twice, he begins angrily singing about his hatred of Mario and desires to destroy him again, now summoning even more enemies and becoming even more powerful. After taking out the lights and taking down Phantom yet again, he lets out a sobbing tantrum before being defused.

Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope[]

Although the Phantom doesn't physically appear in the main game, he is mentioned several times throughout the game's fourth planet, Terra Flora. By investigating various murals across the planet, it is revealed that, following his defeat, the Phantom became a celebrity host for the annual Galactovision song contest. However, during the event he constantly tried to outshine his co-host, Bea, with both eventually ruining their voices. He and Bea began a whirlwind relationship after this, culminating in the Phantom callously breaking up with her via text during her acceptance speech at the Galaxy Music Awards. Bea's career ended shortly following their breakup, and she would eventually retire to Terra Flora to become an organic farmer, and the planet's Warden.

The Phantom serves as the titular main antagonist of the Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, Rayman and the Phantom’s Show. At the beginning of the game, the Phantom greets Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Peach, Beep-0 and Rayman. It is revealed that he is now the head of the Space Opera Network, and that he wanted the four of them to preform on various different stages as his stars. Although they were at first reluctant, they eventually became convinved that he had changed for the better. The Phantom appeared at each of these stages to give the group a briefing on the performances. He would also appear at the end of each chapter, congratulating them and giving them a grade on their work. At the end of the DLC, the Phantom revealed that he was just using the heroes to get rid of the Agents of Darkmess that had infested the theater. After singing a song about how much he hated Rayman, he engaged the group in combat. During his battle, he put on a "Swingin'" persona and a "Rockin'" persona. After singing one more number in which he taunted the heroes, he dramatically staged his defeat.

Personality[]

When he is still an ordinary Rabbid, he is as mischievous, curious and playful as his fellow Rabbids, while causing trouble without thinking of the consequences. After his transformation, Phantom is best described as being extremely wicked by nature, vain, arrogant, greedy, and egotistical. He constantly regards himself as being superior to Mario and his friends and believes that he will destroy them even when he is quite weak and vulnerable. Even during the heat of battle, Phantom still remains concerned about his appearance. During his second ballad, he questions why Mario and his friends aren't kneeling before because he is "the star" and later states that they are not worth his time. He also has a flair for dramatization and a passion for opera.

For reasons unknown, Phantom was also deeply hateful, loathsome, calculating, and jealous towards Mario and sings about his desire to kill him. Throughout the entirety of both his ballads, Phantom openly insults and pokes fun at Mario, mocking his "plumb-shaped" weight, mustache, relationship with Princess Peach, and much more, taking joy in harassing Mario and his friends. In one of his lyrics, he states that Mario has done him "a thousand wrongs ever since Donkey Kong", meaning that his hatred for Mario stems from his very first appearance in video game.

Battle[]

In battle, the Phantom is initially immune to all attacks. To be able to damage him, Mario and co. must destroy the light fixtures beside him, disabling the spotlights focused on him; the Phantom becomes vulnerable once all active light fixtures are smashed. Each phase of the battle has one more light fixture to smash than the last, as well as giving the boss new Rabbid minions at the end of his first turn; Valkyries, Bucklers, and Peek-a-Boos. His main attack is an operatic shriek that acts like a Rocket weapon; it hits everyone within a radius for 40 HP and can inflict the Push effect. He can also activate a ghostly shield around him; the first hero to move within range becomes petrified, unable to take further action for their turn.

Upon his defeat, the Phantom will throw a melodramatic, sobbing tantrum.

Trivia[]

  • Phantom's second ballad was shown in the game's second trailer on August 1.
  • Phantom's full name is a parody of the Phantom of the Opera.
    • Despite it being his full name, Phantom is not referred to as the Phantom of the Bwahpera throughout his entire appearance.
    • It should be noted that the way he antagonizing Mario and try to get Peach like him to seem likely to take an element of Erik'way to get Christine Daaé (who was the female protagonist) and antagonizing Vicomte Raoul de Chagny (another protagonist).
  • Phantom is the only Rabbid in any game to speak using actual words rather than screams and grunts.
    • It should be noted that this is because of the Phonograph that he is fused with.
  • It is currently unknown why Phantom has such a great personal resentment towards Mario, considering that all other Rabbids in the game, even ones fused with members of the Koopa Troop, don't have such a hatred for him.
  • Phantom is the first character in any Mario game (not including sub-series games) to have a song number, the second being Pauline in Super Mario Odyssey.
    • However, while Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was released first, the E3 trailer in which Pauline sings Jump Up Super Star! was shown before the Phantom's ballad.
  • In the game, the Phantom's ballad only had two verses. However, the game's soundtrack reveals that it originally had three. Only the first and third verses of the song are heard in-game with the second left unused. it is unknown why the second verse was removed, but it's lyrics mentioned a gap between Mario and the Phantom which doesn't exist where the boss fight takes place.
  • In an interview with Grant Kirkhope, the music director for Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, he mentions that his original idea for the Phantom's boss battle was divided into three verses, with the first one being an opera, the second being rock, and the third being a rap. He also mentions that, as he created this original concept, he had to do a test recording of himself covering the entire song. While this version of the song was never used in the game, he mentions that it is likely that Ubisoft still has his original recording.
  • During his songs, Tom Phan breaks the fourth wall, referring in particular to Donkey Kong, the first Super Mario Bros., and Mario Kart.
  • In Sparks of Hope, it's revealed that the Phantom was in a relationship with Bea, the warden of Terra Flora but eventually broke up.
